The history of VINGSTED

VINGSTED is located in the small village of Vingsted near Vejle. Going back in time, the name VINGSTED originated from the bend in the river – “ving” means bend or curve. Vingsted is where the river “bends” in the landscape – and you can see this with your own eyes right outside the door.

A long history – briefly told

For more than 150 years, VINGSTED has been a powerhouse in constant change – always with people at its heart. Here we have tried to tell the story – in a nutshell.

1868
The Vejle County Shooting Association was formed.

1900
Vingsted became the permanent home for the association’s activities.

1904
A stray bullet struck a horse-drawn carriage a few kilometres from Vingsted. This brought shooting activities to an abrupt halt. The annual festival moved around the county.

1935
Vingsted County Shooting and Gymnastics Association (VASG&I) purchased 8–10 acres of land in Vingsted for 1,000 Danish kroner per acre and leased additional land for a total of 39 shooting ranges.

1936
Vingsted Stadium was inaugurated with sports facilities and shooting ranges.

1943–47
The Germans seized the area during World War II. After the war, Vingsted served as a refugee camp.

1970–74
The independent institution Vingstedcentret was established, and major construction projects were carried out. On 21 May 1974, Queen Margrethe and Prince Henrik inaugurated the Vingstedcentr , saying: “For the growth of all good forces in this country, I hereby inaugurate this centre.”

1980’erne–1990’erne
The centre was expanded with new rooms, classrooms and Denmark’s largest indoor shooting range. DGI moved in as a neighbour and established its headquarters in Vingsted.

2000–2011
New halls, meeting rooms, rooms and a large restaurant were built. Vingstedcentret changed its name to VINGSTED hotel & conference centre.

2017–2019
The halls were modernised, and the Vingsalen hall, with room for 800 guests, was inaugurated.

2023–2025
The foundation changed its name to Den erhvervsdrivende fond VINGSTED hotel & konferencecenter (The Commercial Foundation VINGSTED Hotel & Conference Centre). New renovations and a rebranding with a new logo marked a new era.
